History AND MISSION
In 2009, when David Sykes and Cynthia Carrion founded Uptown Soccer Academy, no-cost soccer training programs were not available for children in the Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods. They formed Uptown Soccer to bring high quality soccer coaching, the joy of soccer and open the soccer field of dreams for hundreds of families in Northern Manhattan. Soccer is right and not a privilege for children in the community. This mantra has gone on to become the organization’s mission and legacy, as we continue to create a new model for the sport; becoming a place for young people to play the game they love, no matter their financial means, with a focus on fun, learning and community building above all else. |
Why we're here |
Uptown Soccer provides a safe place for kids to be active in the after school hours, and at the same time help kids develop as community members and healthy, successful individuals.
Northern Manhattan is one of the lowest income areas of New York City and an area with a significant immigrant population: the need for an accessible, no-cost program where kids can simply come and play. |
Our programs |
Uptown Soccer runs outdoor training programs in the fall and spring, an indoor program during the winter and a summer camp. Approximately 800 boys and girls participate in our programs throughout the year. The program has given kids - many of whom come from countries where "futbol is life" - a place to play the game they love.
